Sallies soccer player McDonough dies...

Salesianum School soccer player Andrew McDonough, whose fight against leukemia and a bloodstream infection inspired an outpouring of support from the community, has died....

McDonough, 14, passed away this afternoon, family members told The News Journal.

McDonough, a freshman soccer player at Salesianum, was diagnosed with leukemia on Jan. 29. That day, McDonough suffered a severe case of septic shock, or infection in his bloodstream. He spent more than four months in intensive care at A.I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital for a vigil in March and fund-raising events have been organized to benefit the family and raise awareness of childhood leukemia.
